Stowe's Stick Season Has a Calendar, If You Know Where to Look

Spruce Peak has posted the exact day each of its base-village kitchens pauses for stick season 2026, along with the day each one comes back. Most of those reopenings land on one Friday, November 20. Over the 33 days between the last gondola ride and that Friday, Spruce Peak Arts, Go Stowe and the Green Mountain Club have posted dates of their own for shows, gallery openings and guided hikes.

The Two Dates That Empty the Base Village

The slowdown comes in two steps, a week apart.

October 11 was the first. Zamboni's Creemee Hut on the village green closed for the season, and the WhistlePig Pavilion started what Spruce Peak calls "a short break." The Aqua Pool Bar had already closed for the season and now sends food and drinks out through Spruce Peak To-Go. The Pantry went from 9 a.m.–9 p.m. to 9 a.m.–3 p.m. daily, and the Beanery Cafe went from 7 a.m.–4 p.m. to 7 a.m.–2 p.m. Stowe Rocks, the Spruce Peak climbing center, also closed for the season on the 11th.

October 18 finishes the job. The resort lists the Gondola SkyRide running daily through that Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weather permitting. The Auto Toll Road's season ends the same day, and it has been running 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. since September 26. October 18 is also the last Sunday of the Stowe Farmers Market, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the market's own site. Go Stowe's listing shows an October 25 date as well, but the organizer's posted season ends on the 18th.

At Spruce Peak, Pico Taco closes for its break that day, and Tipsy Trout moves to a shorter week.

One kitchen keeps its full schedule. Spruce Peak lists Alpine Hall as open daily for breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. It also pours free drip coffee there every morning from 6:30 to 8:30.

Five Weeks, Week by Week

From October 18 to November 20 is 33 days. Here is what's on the calendar in that window.

Week of October 19

  • Tuesday, Oct. 20, 10 a.m. Cirque US Stories at Spruce Peak Arts, $11.
  • Friday, Oct. 23, 7 p.m. The Showman at Spruce Peak Arts, listed at $24.26 to $26.40.
  • Saturday, Oct. 24, 11 a.m. The Green Mountain Club's free "Fall to Winter Forests" guided hike on its Short Trail. The club describes it as a look at "the last pieces of fall and the transition to stick season and winter." It meets at 4711 Waterbury-Stowe Road in Waterbury Center, and preregistration is encouraged.

Week of October 26

  • Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 Women's Wellness Weekend at Spruce Peak.
  • Saturday, Oct. 31 Night Zero's Haunted Garden at Stowe Cider, 17 Town Farm Lane. Stowe Cider's page lists 4 to 6 p.m. Go Stowe separately lists a ticketed evening haunted-house set from 8 to 11 p.m. Check Stowe Cider directly to see which session you're buying for.

Week of November 2

  • Sunday, Nov. 1 First of the free Sunday open mics at Après Only, 433 Mountain Road, 3 to 7 p.m. It repeats every Sunday in November, and the listing carries it into December.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 3 First of the Treat Yourself Tuesdays at The Spa at Spruce Peak, 7412 Mountain Road, 4 to 7 p.m. It costs $50 per person, is 21 and over, and includes spa access and a glass of champagne. Booking is by phone at 802-760-4782. It repeats Nov. 10, 17 and 24.
  • Thursday, Nov. 5, 5 to 7 p.m. Opening reception for the Members' Art Show + Sale at The Current. The show runs through Dec. 12.
  • Friday, Nov. 6 Green Mountain Showdown at Spruce Peak Arts, doors at 7 p.m. and show at 8.
  • Saturday, Nov. 7 Two events on one day. In the morning, the Green Mountain Club's free "Trails and Tales" guided hike and storytime runs 10:30 to 11:30 in Waterbury Center. In the evening, "A Journey of Place," a free exhibition, reception and sale of work by artist Andrew Orr, runs 5 to 7 p.m. at Bryan Fine Art Gallery, 64 South Main Street.

Week of November 9

  • Saturday, Nov. 14, 11 a.m. A second "Fall to Winter Forests" hike. By mid-November the woods it covers will look quite different from the October 24 walk.
  • Sunday, Nov. 15, 7 p.m. Stewart Copeland, "Have I Said Too Much?", at Spruce Peak Arts, 122 Hourglass Drive. Tickets through the venue's event page run up to $64.85.

Add Warren Miller on November 20 and that makes five Spruce Peak Arts dates, two gallery openings, three guided hike outings and a weekly open mic before the base village reopens. The hikes, the open mic and the Andrew Orr reception are free.

One correction to Go Stowe's calendar, which lists Welcome to Night Vale's "Murder Night in Blood Forest" on November 24. Spruce Peak Arts' own page has it on Friday, December 4, at 7 p.m.

November 20 Does Double Duty

The two longest Spruce Peak breaks end on the same day. The Spruce Peak dining page lists daily winter service resuming November 20 at both the WhistlePig Pavilion and Pico Taco. That leaves the WhistlePig fire pit cold for less than six weeks and the Pico Taco counter closed for about five.

Spruce Peak Arts has Warren Miller's "Days Off" that same Friday, with screenings at 5 and 8 p.m. The ski film tour comes to town on the same night the base-village kitchens reopen, which makes November 20 the clearest published start of winter at the base.

Stowe Mountain Resort has not published a lift opening date for 2026–27. In its August 18, 2026 announcement of 2026–27 opening dates, Vail Resorts named other mountains and said more resort dates would follow. The release did not include Stowe. You may see a November 22 opening target in search results. That was last season's announcement, for 2025–26. As of October 12, the base village has a published restart date and the lifts don't.

Thanksgiving Week Finishes the Handoff

Tipsy Trout reopens last, and its two official listings don't match. Spruce Peak's page says it closes Monday through Wednesday starting October 18, with daily winter service from November 25. Hyatt's page for The Lodge at Spruce Peak says it closes only on Wednesdays and goes daily on November 28. If you're planning an oyster night in late November, the Tock reservation page is the safer check.

Once Tipsy Trout is back, holiday events follow over the next few days:

Date Event Where
Thursday, Nov. 26 Thanksgiving dinner, 3 to 8 p.m. Spruce Peak
Thursday, Nov. 26 Thanksgiving plated special, open to all von Trapp Bierhall
Friday, Nov. 27 Mistletoe's pop-up bar opens Spruce Peak
Friday, Nov. 27 Afternoon tea, noon to 3 p.m. Tipsy Trout
Saturday, Nov. 28 Holiday tree lighting von Trapp Family Lodge

The detail at von Trapp is about who gets in. The von Trapp happenings page lists the Thanksgiving buffet in the lodge for resort guests, while the Bierhall's plated special is open to everyone.

What the Published Schedules Leave Out

Everything above has a date because Spruce Peak, the arts center and the event organizers posted one. Stowe's independent restaurants and shops along the Mountain Road, Route 100 and in the village haven't posted 2026 stick-season plans in any source we could find. That doesn't mean they're open, and it doesn't mean they're closed.

Last year's reporting shows how much schedules vary from place to place. In November 2025, Seven Days wrote that many mountain-town hospitality businesses "close to rest and refresh before winter tourists descend." The same story said Edson Hill was on its stick-season break. Less than three miles away, Burt's Irish Pub owner Janet Martinez told Seven Days that the pub, now back at 2160 Mountain Road, had never closed for stick season, and that the heart of its clientele is locals who stick around. Those are 2025 accounts. Edson Hill's 2026 dining page lists dinner Tuesday through Sunday and doesn't mention a fall break. For any independent spot you rely on, the business's own page or a phone call is the only current answer.

Bare November branches also show a house and its setting differently than summer foliage does. If you're thinking about what your home looks like in this light, Grant Wieler can walk the property with you before the snow arrives. Start Your Stowe Search.
